dance writer

At first, dance reviewing was just a way to combine an old skill with a new one to make a little pocket money (and little enough at that!), but I quickly became intrigued by the various purposes of criticism, the priorities and proclivities a reviewer takes into the theatre with them, and the compact form of a 600-word review. Critics with an onstage history of their own are quite rare, and bold, informed opinions served in place of actual skill for a while. Profiles and interviews gave me more room to play and grow but I was always more interested in the practice of dance/performance than the analysis, which prevented me from turning to deeper theoretical research.

My writing appeared frequently in Dance Australia magazine and The Australian, as well as the Sydney Morning Herald, the CourierMail and Tanz Europe, among others.
